Why Does the Surefooted Journal Work for Me?
A look at how structure and design make this journal different from a blank notebook.
When Surefooted began in 2021, our focus was on Walking and Talking in Nature. The world was slowly opening up after Covid, and people were looking for ways to connect and process the tricky times we were all facing (myself included).
Before long, though, we realized we needed more than conversation - we needed a framework to help capture insights and move goals forward. After all, goals without a framework are really just wishes or daydreams. Out of that need, the Surefooted Journal was born.
Since then, we’ve published three editions, with our fourth launching this fall. The journal guides Surefooters through capturing their Why - in other words, what they want most in life - clarifying their values, and defining a vision for their future. From there, it helps set three meaningful goals to work through in the upcoming 90 days. The daily section then connects back to those goals each week, breaking bigger dreams into smaller, actionable steps.
So why does this structure work so well for me - and why do I think it will work for you too?
First of all, it’s quick and easy. I spend about 10 minutes each morning with my coffee, Surefooted Journal, and day planner, checking in with myself before the day begins. Each entry starts with reflecting on “how I feel today,” a simple yet powerful habit that helps me recognize and understand my emotions. From there, the questions ground me in my intentions for the day. In plain language - it helps me plan my day rather than letting my day happen to me.
I’ve also learned that it’s essential to schedule the things that make me happy. My Surefooted Journal reminds me of what matters most - time in nature, movement, connection with people I love - and helps me make sure those things fit into my daily routine. And just like my other journals, it keeps me rooted in gratitude. Even when life gets chaotic, I can pause, reflect, and feel thankful for the small things that matter most.
At the end of the week, Saturday is for reflection: what went well, what didn’t. Sunday is for looking ahead: how do I want the coming week to feel?
Through this short daily routine, I’ve achieved more in the past four years than I could have imagined. I’ve changed careers, started two companies, lived on the north coast of the Dominican Republic for three years (where I surfed over 700 times!), reached my goal of reaching a seven-figure investment portfolio, and fulfilled a lifelong dream of moving to Italy with my family.
To date, I’ve completed over 20 Surefooted Journals, and I truly believe my happiness and success are tied to this daily practice. I hope you’ll give it a try and discover the same clarity, gratitude, and joy it has brought me.
Happy journaling, and stay Surefooted.
